Cellulite is a condition that occurs when the areas of fat on your hips, buttocks and thighs are pulled downwards to the deeper tissues by connective tissues. It is basically a formation of lumps and dimples in the skin. Studies have shown that approximately 90 per cent of women are affected by cellulite. But there is a lot of confusion surrounding this topic. Let’s clear the air by separating myths from facts that overshadow the reality of cellulite.

Myth: Cardio is the solution to cellulite

Well, cardio might help you shed the extra kilos, it is really strength training that helps combat cellulite. However, cardio can visibly reduce the appearance of dimples, but they will not smooth out the skin.

Fact: Cellulite is more common among women than men

Women contain more fat in around the thigh and hip area, making them more likely to get cellulite. Even the connective tissues used to support these areas are weaker than men. But this doesn’t mean that men are immune to getting cellulite. Reports have shown that at least 10% of the total population affected by cellulite are men.

Myth: Toxins in the body causes cellulite

Cellulite occurs when the underlying fat deposits begin to push through layers of collagen fibres, or connective tissues, under the skin. So, the claims that toxins present in the body cause cellulite don’t seem authentic. In fact, connective tissues become weak due to lack of exercise, excess fat, poor blood circulation and hormonal changes.

Fact: Cellulite gets worse with age

Hormonal changes may lead to the onset of cellulite, especially among women. With increasing age, women’s body produces less estrogen, meaning poor circulation, decrease in new collagen production and breakdown of older connective tissue.

Myth: Cellulite only happens to overweight people

Yes, people who are overweight have more fat, which can definitely put some stress on the connective tissues. But that doesn’t mean that it only affects people who are out-of-shape. Cellulite can happen to women of all shapes and sizes.

Fact: Non-invasive laser treatments help with cellulite

Non-invasive laser treatments such as VelaShape III and others have proved effective in removing cellulite over the years. They are effective for a short term and can help improve cellulite appearance. But this is not a permanent solution.

Myth: Liposuction will make it look better

Liposuction is not the solution for you if cellulite is your problem. In fact, it will make it look even worse by uneven fat distribution and thinning of layers below the skin.

Fact: Some foods help with cellulite

What you eat is what shows on your body. A well-balanced diet can help reduce inflammation, maintain a healthy weight and keep the connective tissues strong. Incorporate cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes and bell peppers in your diet as they contain a lot of water.

Myth: Skin firming creams help get rid of cellulite

There is no evidence to prove that skin firming creams help with cellulite.

Fact: Genes may affect cellulite

As a matter of fact, genes do play a role in cellulite. If someone in your family has cellulite, chances are you will have it too.
